History of the Blue Bomber

Mary Mackenzie, historian emeritus for the town and village of Lake Placid, has supplied the answer to the question, "How did the athletic teams at Lake Placid High School get the name 'Blue Bombers'?" Mary's research uncovered the fact that Les Nash, a reporter for the Lake Placid News was the one who coined the name and it stuck.

Nash reportd on the sports events for the News in the late 1930's. Then, the teams were referred to as "the Blue and Gold" or the "Lake Placid Blue" in his sports' stories. Nash began to use terms such as "Blue Terrors" and in an article dated Dec. 1938, he cam up with the name "Blue Bombers." The term stuck. Soon "Blue Bombers" became the nick-name for Lake Placid's athletes.
